In the files of the Boonsborough Museum of History I found letters written to Col. Tufts of the Soldiers Relief Committee. They reveal the humble items donated to the "Angel of the Battlefield" for the task of tending thousands of wounded soldiers. Every item in this song is listed in one of these letters. I also sifted through Clara's biographies and diaries where her spirited personality shines with internal rhymes!

Give our thanks to Clara
He said "It's no place for a woman"

She said "It's no place for a man

Load the wagon. We'll out flank them

Following the cannons with a healing hand"
CHORUS: With a healing hand, Sir please deliver

Our donations, if you can find her

Old socks and blankets are in the carton

Give our thanks to Clara Barton
One box containing our old pieces

16 Arm Slings, Milk in one can

One pair of Sheets, 21 Handkerchiefs

Are useful to a woman with a healing hand
CHORUS:

She's on the front lines, you can be certain

Give our thanks to Clara Barton
In her own hand she kept a diary

"We knew there was trouble ahead

But it was better left unsaid

I was faint but I could not eat

Weary but I could not sleep

And too depressed to weep, I prayed..."
With just one wagon at South Mountain

Water, slippers, towels and eggs

On to Antietam, ride out to meet them

Pray for strength of arm and speed of legs
CHORUS:

She's with the wounded. They could be our sons

Give our thanks to Clara Barton

Give our thanks to Clara Barton

And a red cross to Clara Barton
Give our thanks mmmm
